Coaching Certificate Requirements

*This is a "non-transcripted certificate" program. (i.e. The certificate will NOT appear on your Texas A&M Transcript.  The certificate will be issued solely at the discretion of the Thornton-McFerrin Coaching Academy.  

The requirements below must be completed prior to graduation to earn the coaching certificate.  There is not a fee to enter the program however some elements listed below must be paid by the participant.

SKILL DEVELOPMENT

  • CPR/First Aid Certification - Conducted through TMCA ($70)
  • Child Protection Training through CPM website
  • Complete 4 Coaching Academy Workshops per year
  • One-time completion of the following 4 Coaching Academy Modules (will be freely available in Canvas on 3/1/2024):
    • Officials
    • Weight Room Safety
    • Sexual Misconduct
    • Role Conflict: The Teacher - Coach
  • Complete Minimum of 5 credit hours of TAMU coursework related to coaching.  Options include:
    • KINE 215 (1 credit) - Fundamentals of Coaching (required)
    • KINE 334 (2 credits) - Coaching in Personal Training (Pre-Req = 215)
    • KINE 312 (2 credits) - Coaching of Baseball (Pre-Req = 215)
    • KINE 314 (2 credits) - Coaching of Soccer (Pre-Req = 215)
    • KINE 317 (2 credits) - Coaching of Football (Pre-Req = 215)
    • KINE 321 (2 credits) - Coaching of Volleyball (Pre-Req = 215) 
    • KINE 335 (2 credits) - Coaching in Group Fitness (Pre-Req = 215)
    • KINE 351 (2 credits) - Coaching of Basketball (Pre-Req = 215)
    • KINE 355 (2 credits) - Coaching of Track (Pre-Req = 215)
  • Professional Practices for Coaching TMCA Workshop (In lieu of Code of Ethics Training)
    • The original training module is no longer available.
    • A workshop training will be scheduled in lieu of the module.

Experience

  • Complete 40 hours of coaching in primary sport
  • Complete 20 hours of coaching in secondary sport

Networking

  • Join Student Coaches Association (SCA) & remain in good standing ($40 annually)
  • Attend 3 SCA events per semester (Meetings, Student Seminar, Social Gatherings, Marketing Events, etc.)

Additional Requirements

  • Meet with Career Development Coordinator once per semester.
  • Complete and upload the Talent Release Form (indicates if you are ok with being in videos and pictures.)
